Breaking a Vicious Cycle
We’re drenched in a 24-hour news cycle that is curated to make us feel afraid—so we watch more news.
I used to be a news junkie. All it took was for me to hear some anchor person to announce, “Breaking news!”, to fixate me to the TV screen. After a while, though, I started noticing the effect it had on me, and it was usually bad. I’d feel anxious, depressed, overwhelmed with the sense that there were horrible things that I had no control over. As a result, I’ve learned that in order to protect my wellbeing, I have to limit how much news I watch. Lately, I haven’t watched any and instead get my news from scanning headlines. Disconnecting from unnerving media has given me more time to reconnect to the healing natural world, and I feel much better for it.
