Although Flowers for the Living was just recently released, I actually finished writing it over six years ago. I had no idea then how closely real life events would mirror those in my novel. It never dawned on me that by the time the novel was released, the issue of white cops killing unarmed African-Americans and vengeful African-Americans attacking white police officers would have this country in such turmoil. This saddens me, bewilders me, too. After all, this is 2016—well into the twenty-first century. We should be beyond this. But we clearly are not. Why?
One thing I know for sure—violence only begets more violence. Somehow, like the two main characters in Flowers for the Living –we must find a way to connect to the humanness in one another and build upon that to create a better world for ourselves and the generations to come.
