Reading and book signing at Hub City Bookshop in Spartanburg, SC
October 25, 2016, was one of the happiest days of my life because it started with being a guest on “Walter Edgar’s Journal”, and ended with a reading and book signing at the gorgeous Hub City Bookshop in Spartanburg, SC, where dear friends Gayle and Jack Powers surprised me with a visit. They had been my surrogate parents during the year I lived in Spartanburg after finishing grad school in 1988, but I hadn’t seen them in over ten years. In fact, for whatever reason, I assumed they didn’t live in Spartanburg anymore. I’m so thankful that they still did; that we re-connected, and that I’ll be spending the night with them next month as I travel to Asheville, NC, to do a reading and book signing at the W. Asheville Library on Monday, Nov. 14.
And here’s the sweetest thing about seeing Jack and Gayle again, during the book signing at Hub City, I caught them holding hands and giving each other looks that clearly showed that despite decades of marriage (or perhaps because of them), they still adored one another to the moon and back. So wonderful to see when too many marriages bite the dust before the ink’s dry on their marriage certificates.
